Predictions and Prospects

So the latest predictions have Democrats picking up six Senate seats, giving them a 51-49 majority, and anywhere from 27 to 40 seats in the House, for a solid majority in that chamber, too.  There will be plenty of irregularities, and some tight races, and depending on how audacious the cheaters, some not-so-tight ones that will turn out the opposite of what's expected.  Trust me.

But it looks like some semblance of balance is to be restored, if briefly, in Washington.  The first thing the Democrats should do is work to undo everything the Republicans have done.  They should be as aggressive and merciless in pursuing even the whiff of corruption on the other side of the aisle as the GOP has been lax.  They should stand up to Bush on Iraq as soon as possible, so that they can end our involvement there well before the next campaign cycle begins in earnest.

If the Democrats get in there and continue to wheedle and weasel and whinge and whine, they'll be giving the '08 election away, likely to a nightmare Mitt Romney/Jeb Bush or an utterly whacko John McCain/Bill Frist ticket.  Enough already.
