Ooh, Do Tell!

Jason Notte did an interview with Brad Luna of the Human Rights Campaign about the military's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy that ran on page 9 of this morning's Metro.

Notte's last—somewhat bewildering—question for Luna: "Are you concerned that the [effort to repeal the military's DADT policy] may end in another compromise, like segregated units?"

I thought that's what the Navy was invented for.

But seriously now. I don't know that anyone's suggested or imagined units segregated by sexual preference—but personally, I LOVE the idea! The only thing is I don't think it would be fair to the straight units, the gay ones would be looking so cute in their little uniforms:

...which would come in lots of fabulous colors to blend with all the fabulous surroundings, like the sex clubs and quaint little cafes and boutiques you'd just have to have on the gay aircraft carriers and the gay bases...

...and the gay troops would be having so much fun back in the barracks...

Shower time in the straight barracks *yawn*.

Shower time in the gay barracks *yay!*

No, it would never do. As in civilian life there's no such thing as separate but equal. The gay units would soon be reviled not only for their fashion acumen, but for their superior masculine specimens.  You'd start hearing, "all the good-looking grunts are gay."

No, it's clearly not fair to put straight troops at such a disadvantage and at increased risk by removing so many of the best soldiers from their midst.

The whole DADT thing is a bunch of crap. When I was in the Coast Guard, it was hardly a secret that I was gay, and nobody from the Commanding Officer on down to my Chief Petty Officer gave a rat's ass. As long as I did my job, did it well, nobody cared.

And, I got to tell the military homophobes out there, at 4:30 in the morning after a long night-watch, the LAST thing on my mind was having sex with my fellow shipmates. Straight or gay, it's incredibly stupid to get your honey where you get your money.
