Corruption, Incompetence, Cronyism Finally Front Page News
Today's Globe front page hit the trifecta...

Now, this is news. Finally. You've got your skullduggery—Bush stacking The US Commission on Civil Rights with cronies committed to undermining its mission (well, that's nothing new there, actually). You got your bald-face corruption at the Mass Turnpike Authority, where ex-chairman Matt Amorello gave himself and pals parting gifts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars for untaken sick-leave. You've got your high-cost crap concept and construction that MIT is suing Frank Gehry over. But come on, did you really think it wouldn't leak? I mean, look at it:

No, really. It's MIT we're talking here, not Bunker Hill Community College. Which brings us to our next story, about how, while Harvard and MIT are spending gazillions on brand-new leaky, crap-constructed buildings, colleges in the state-run system have to settle for leaky, crap-constructed buildings from the seventies, because they don't have the funds to hire architects like Gehry to design new ones. They don't even have money for a new coat of paint to freshen things up. Then you've got more incompetence and lack of commitment on the part of city government in the Hub's pie-in-the-sky wifi plan. Why no wifi? Look at the picture accompanying the article—do you see any white people in it? Ditto the one accompanying the "old-look campus" article. And to wrap it up, there's Pakistan, bringing to the fore the Bush Administration's lies about fighting the war on terror for the noble causes of freedom and democracy.
A front page to remember, a near perfect snapshot of a sinking ship.

I've always hated the Stata Center. When I was a temp whore at MIT, I frequently had to make office stops for various reasons of my job in that damned building. I could NEVER find the offices. It's as if one had entered an alternative universe, or a bad dream where the corridors get longer and you can never quite reach the door.
