Why Romney Won't Ever Be Giving The JFK Speech

Google "romney jfk" and you get a quarter of a million hits in .19 seconds.  ("Obama jfk" yields half a million, but "hillary jfk" garners a million and a half.  Go figure.)

Personally, I've been kind of puzzled at the media's continued insistence that Romney must give his "JFK speech" about religion.  The Romney-JFK thing is all wrong, really.

First of all, consider that JFK was assuring voters that he believed in the separation of Church and State.  That's so, like, 1960.  This is not what the voters Romney would be courting with his so-called "JFK speech" are looking for at all.  Quite the opposite.  They're more apt to say, "Mr. Romney, break down that wall!"

The "JFK speech" was also about assurances that the Church hierarchy wouldn't make policy for the President.  Kennedy wanted everyone to know he did not serve at the Pope's pleasure, but at the American people's.  Again, the folks Romney needs to win over with his "JFK speech" don't mind if he takes orders from a church, they just want to be the church he takes orders from.

The Religious Right is a motley bunch of snake-oil salesmen and two-bit shysters.  Reforms of recent years have turned their churches into PACs and tax-havens, and they don't care who's in there as long as he proves he's willing to pander to them.
