Who Cleans the John in the Garden of Eden?
There was a feature in The Globe recently about how the quality and upkeep of a business's restrooms is "taken personally" by employees and patrons, which I think is very true. In fact, if it's not a truism, it definitely should be. Thinking about it took me back to the last time I dropped in tothe Garden of Eden in the South End for a bite with a friend.
If I remember well, they have just one teensy-weensy unisex bathroom, and apparently no one around to tidy it up on weekends, because when I went to wash my hands — let's just say this was one of the most memorably untidy restrooms I've ever encountered, and I have been in some pretty unsavory johns in my time.
Turns out the GOE, despite its occasionally uppity attitude, failed fully half the health inspections the city conducted on it last year, and passed the other half with violations. Surprisingly, none of them had to do with the restroom.
Not that I have anything against The GOE. I think the menu needs revamping. The food's OK, but it's a little overpriced. But it's a South End staple, and one of the too few spots for people-watching in one of the most people-watchable spots in the whole city.
They have a little attitude, which I don't mind, but it's more than a place with a john in that condition can afford. Remember, pride goeth before a fall.

Hmmm...I think you're onto something: last few weeks, they've been shuttered and dark the past few weeks for $200K+ in unpaid meals taxes - not, again, a filthy bathroom, just as that might be. This was caused, they say, by a mis-programmed cash register left over from when the food market was in the same space, not by intentional skimming. The sons from Lionettes are trying to buy the parents out to bail it all out - maybe they'll clean the bathroom, too!
