Not Really Diggin' It

I was down by Emerson College today, and while I stood on a street corner waiting to cross  I saw a tall, rather odd but distinguished-looking older gentleman open up a Weekly Dig news box, take out the big stack of copies of the paper that had been delivered yesterday from it, and tuck all of them under his arm.

Since he didn't seem to be in their demographic of twelve to fifteen year olds I thought, hmm, must be going to line his bird cage with them. But then he walked over to the nearby rubbish bin and matter-of-factly, with that taking-out-the-garbage look, dumped the whole stack into it. He then walked calmly to the curb and waited for the light to change, so that he could cross the street and empty the Dig box on the other side on his way to the T.

I was intrigued, I have to say, and I would have asked him what he had against The Dig if I'd thought I could do it without sounding like I disapproved of what he'd done. In fact, I had mixed emotions. Ever since Joe Keohane's departure and especially since the return of Jeff Lawrence ("Alas, this is just the beginning," as he himself warned), the weekly's been hardly worth the price. And it's free.

But potential advertisers might want to take this as a cautionary tale. There may not be quite as many copies in circulation as The Dig's ad guys tell you.  I get the feeling this old guy gets around.

The Dig box near Old State House is always empty. Maybe he gets around to more?

    Mike,

    Thanks for supporting free speech.

Unlike you and your blog, we do have to worry about an occasional wack job throwing away 50 copies. However, we've had many people over the years call us about this guy, put the papers back in the box after he left, and in one case, call the cops. The man is a bit unstable but it's still a crime and quite a few people react to it that way, love us or hate us.

Maybe if he launched a denial of service attack on your sites because he didn't like you, you would change your mind about that...or not.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words. Joe says hi. He still likes you.

      Heya Jeff!

Thanks for the heads up on the "denial of service attack" scenario. Yikes. You know a lot about this kind of thing? Will you be my frenemy?

Jeff, despite our stormy past I want you to know I admire your lack of subtlety, tact and knowledge of the rules of grammar.  Frankly, it makes me horny.

      Keep in touch, bro.

      Mike
