Welcome to My Jungle

"Here there be tigers."
I haven't posted many pictures from my Fenway garden lately — although I usually keep my flickr stream pretty up-to-date — partly because I'm still catching up from monsoon season. When I opted for grass paths rather than woodchips, my paths were wide enough for a narrow push-reel mower to get through. But every year I expanded the beds a bit, and now the paths are too narrow for a mower.
They still need to be maintained, of course, if not exactly manicured. Occasionally, if I can I bum a weed-wacker from a neighbor, but as often as not I end up clipping them with handheld lawn clippers as I work in the beds. If I keep up with it, I sort of cycle through the whole garden over the course of a week, and everything turns out dandy by the weekend. But when it gets out of hand, it's a monster.
Here's where things stand at the moment...

As you can see, plantwise, it's actually a run-of-the-mill low-maintenance suburban garden. Purple cone flowers, zinnias, a lot of nasturtium this year...

... but be it ever so humble, there's no place like your own little jungle.

What great pictures, and what a great retreat from the city! As a New England transplant in Atlanta, the site of nasturtiums in summer is a welcome respite from the heat!
