OK, get this: I shot an email to Heidi Schork, the artist who painted the mini-mural (she is the Director of the Boston Office of Cultural Affairs "Mural Crew"), and she says it was all an innocent mix-up:
This is the story: I was supposed to paint a lightbox at the corner of Boylston and Charles. I assumed---incorrectly---that the one I painted was the designated Poe box, especially because it was exactly across the street from the street where Poe was born. The correct box, is a teeny one under a tree at the edge of the Bolocco outdoor cafe. So, I had to go and paint out my own work and restore it to its former self...!
The good news? she says she'll be painting the other box as soon as she can get to it. Reply to this
See, this is why Baltimore is doing the Poecentennial this year and not Boston. Since Poe would be 200 this year, you'd think he'd have earned the larger lightbox the artist originally painted to go along with his plaque.
So weird! Especially given that program the city has to let artists paint those boxes.

Yeah, I'd love to get the inside story on this one. You know there's gotta be one.

More Poe, less poo!
More importantly, have you seen this blog that illustrates 'missed connections' from the NY craigslist:

You should do a Boston version, but less cute and more graphic...
