It seems all countries have their wingnuts: Germany's Franz-Josef Strauss, France's Jean-Marie Le Pen, and Japan's Yukio Mishima. The U.S. has John L. Perry (plus a few others, I know, but why bring attention to where it's not needed?). As a poly sci class speculation, studying the potential for a U.S. military coup is worth the time...more for reasons why not than for why.
At the least our military conspicuously lacks a professional cadre, notwithstanding the Academies' graduates, and this fundamental aspect sets the American military apart from the historical militaries of other countries, e.g., Prussia, Russia, China, Britain. Our officers and soldiers always know that they will return to a civilian life ultimately, that they are citizen soldiers and not a class separate by governmental and societal fiat. By these points, Perry's comments are a bit ridiculous.
Still our schools seem not to teach much history, American or otherwise, so there are probably many more wingnuts out there who are susceptible to Perry's sorts of ramblings. As they used to say, backwards reels the mind.
