Are Conservatives Finally Catching On?

Ted Olsen, self-described "lifelong Republican" and veteran of the Reagan and George W. Bush administrations, is taking on Prop 8, and has written an article in Newsweek making the "conservative case for gay marriage" where he says fellow conservatives' knee-jerk hostility toward gay marriage "does not make sense, because same-sex unions promote the values conservatives prize."

What? Like public piety and personal hypocrisy?

No, just giving ya'll a hard time.

Of course, Olsen is absolutely right that the quest for marriage equality is fundamentally a conservative one, seeking to mainstream gay culture.  Some — on both sides of the battle — see that as the biggest threat.

But Olsen's involvement in the Prop 8 trial is a refreshing example of what can happen when reason prevails over radicalism.

Could reproductive rights be next?
