After the Flood

The twenty-minute torrential downpour Saturday afternoon flooded my third-floor office. The roof of the administrative building is thirty years old, and there was apparently a single four-inch drainage pipe for two buildings that just couldn't handle the blast and finally blew out. My desk was basically under a waterfall.
Mmm, sounds kinda picturesque, doesn't it?
Well, I can assure you the aftermath was anything but.
I was off Monday, but came in to survey the damage. It's pretty bad, but because the computers were fried and all my physical files are waterlogged, there's actually not a whole lot I can do, workwise. I know: bummer, right? But I still have to be here to sort it out. IT is overwhlemed as always and setting up remote access looks days away, best-case scenario.
And it looks like more torrential rain tonight! You know what they say: when it rains it pours.
Pretty soon I'll be wearing a wet suit to work.

Seize the opportunity! cut down some of the reeds next to your garden and build a little canopy over your desk and use the water run-off for a lovely air-freshening indoor waterfall. Bring the outside inside! The hot new trend for 2011 will be to make your indoor spaces feel like airy garden hide-aways.

I like the idea of a canopy that doubles as a life raft.

Interesting idea, kind of like a Mini-Ra, or an over-sized Moses-basket. You could also wear it as a gardening hat.

I confess I gasped and said, "Oh, no, not his garden wiped out!" and felt momentarily very relieved that it was 'just' the office.
I hasten to add I do know all too well what a mess it probably is and wish you every consolation and a huge gift of patience.

Well, the garden did take a little beating, too -- I finally had to stake the two huge hollyhocks right as you enter under the rose arch. No such thing as a gentle rain these days...
