Boiled in Oil
Funny how Bush/Cheney and their secret cabal could accomplish everything on their wish list when it came to an Energy policy, but the Obama administration has yet to accomplish anything. Given that this summer, the hottest on record, we have seen the single greatest man-made environmental catastrophe in history due to our out-of-control addiction to oil, you'd think the time would be ripe for some of that hopey-changey stuff. Now's the time to break out the fairy dust, bitches. What are you saving it for?
But not only did Democrats last week abandon an energy/climate bill that would have moved the US a little closer to the global consensus on climate change (even China is doing cap-and-trade — China! CHINA!!!), but the administration apparently blamed Environmentalists for their failure. According to (the admittedly right-leaning) Politico:
One exasperated administration official on Thursday lambasted the environmentalists – led by the Environmental Defense Fund – for failing to effectively lobby GOP senators. The administration, the article goes on, insist
“They didn’t deliver a single Republican,” the official told POLITICO. “They spent like $100 million and they weren’t able to get a single Republican convert on the bill.”
that they did everything they could.... But West Wing officials concluded the poisonous partisan atmosphere in the upper chamber made it necessary to outsource the lobbying effort to green groups.Passing the buck and then pointing the finger. Nice.
We should not expect the energy giants to want to cut back, much less invest in green technology. They've already got a system, and there's still stuff left to suck out of the earth, and nobody's really got the balls to stop 'em. And of course they want to suck every last ounce of oil, coal, and natural gas out of the ground, even if it means deep-water drilling, strip-mining and "fracking" which either risk or actually wreak wholesale destruction of the environment, and foul the water.
But have we become so cynical as to expect our government to go along? And not only to go along, but then to blame their inability to act on those who are pushing hardest for government action, rather than those obstructing it?
I thought we were through the looking glass with the Bush/Cheney regime. Looks like we're still on the other side. Only instead of "Off with their heads!" it's "Boil them in oil!"
