Murder and Metaphor

Uganda has become the number one vacation destination for American Evangelicals on anti-gay crusades.  I have cited Vanguard's very scary documentary on prominent American Evangelicals' role in the movement to make homosexuality a capital offense in Uganda in previous posts , but it's worth citing again.

It's hard to escape the impression that the movement is a modern-day witch-hunt, an appalling example of frenzied scapegoating aided and abetted by Americans.  It is also an inescapable conclusion that were it possible to push through similar legislation at home, the American Evangelicals involved and much of the right that faithfully exploits homophobia to drum up support in American elections, would very happily sign on.

The most recent victim of the witch-hunt is David Kato, a gay rights activist in Uganda, who was bludgeoned to death with a hammer Wednesday.

Today, Don Schmierer, one of the American Evangelicals whose visit to Uganda contributed to the push for capital punishment for gays there reacted to calls for accountability in a way typical of the right when the seed of hate they've planted bears its evil fruit: he claimed to be the victim.

“Naturally, I don’t want anyone killed but I don’t feel I had anything to do with that,” said Mr. Schmierer.... “I spoke to help people,” he said, “and I’m getting bludgeoned from one end to the other.”
A particularly vile choice of metaphor, given the very unmetaphorical method of David Kato's murder.
