From The Week:
Utah's Senate is considering a bill that recognizes a handgun as an official state symbol, a potential national first that has provoked outrage from anti-violence activists. The measure to honor the semiautomatic M1911 handgun was passed by the state House this week, where its sponsor called the gun — created by Utah gunmaker John Moses Browning — "an implement of freedom that has defended America for 100 years."Utah's Senate is certainly full of... ideas. Whether leading the way by exposing the climate change conspiracy or passing laws to seize federal parks through eminent domain so that they can be opened to oil exploration, whether declaring US child-labor laws unconstitutional or proposing to eliminate the twelfth grade, the state's lawmakers can only be called... utahded.

Maybe South Dakota should make the gun the official state symbol, considering the new bill that was filed in response to the federal Health reform bill: http://www.argusleader.com/article/20110131/UPDATES/110131031/Bill-would-require-all-S-D-citizens-buy-gun
